We're Back!

2008_042104220005

(The little bird ornaments are a new item I had designed for the Holidays, but well, never actually got around to making before Christmas!  I decided that they could work year-round with some color adjustments, so I made a few for the show.  I really do like them, they are quite simple, and they seem like little good-luck tokens to me.  There will be several available in my Etsy shop very soon!)

I have to apologize for the cruddy, fuzzy pictures because I always forget to bring my tripod to craft shows.  Which is ridiculous, because I usually end up dragging along everything except the kitchen sink.

The Richmond Craft Mafia put on a fantastic show, in probably one of the hippest venues ever.  Sadly, the weather was not very cooperative and the rain poured all day long.  Monsoon like, really.

2008_042104220010

(Sister's bike seat covers.)

Despite the apocalyptic skies, tons of people braved the elements to come browse and shop, and the day was still cheerful and bustling.  The best part of shows, for me, is justing seeing all of the crafty people together in one place.  It's so darn inspiring, to be part of a movement like this, *sniffle*....better move along before I start to get all gushy.

So, I try not spend all my profits on shopping at the shows I'm in, but that can be difficult with so many talented people around.  This time I had my heart set on buying a necklace from a local jewelry maker I know & love.

2008_042404240001     2008_042404240003

Isn't this just perfect??  I didn't even fully realize how symbolic the little girl with umbrella was until later.  The perfect memento for a very, rainy day.  The pendant is double-sided, and made by the very snazzy Mood Swings (of which I'm sure you are all familiar with, because she's famous and all.)  Something else I love about this piece is that the vintage flower bead at the top actually looks old.  I love it when people aren't afraid to use vintage pieces that really have age to them, stains, fading and wear.  Love it.  I'm so happy!

I do have lots of leftovers to list in the etsy shop, and I hope that I will get to that tomorrow.  I've been playing catch-up on my shipping this week, and Max and I had a super-fun-rainy-day-out on Monday that included a long overdue library visit (get it? over-due visit, haw haw!) and a matinee at MacArthur Regal of Nim's Island.  We both completely loved the movie,  I highly recommend it.  Perfect for the 5 to 10 age group but still interesting enough for an adult to enjoy.  (Yes, Jodie Foster is in it but she's not that annoying.  After watching Contact about a gazillion times, I'm sorta Jodied-out.  "ssshoulda ssentt a poet...ssso, bbbeautiffful....") Kristy, I know you remember that.  Still, not quite as frightening as the migraine-inducing number of times we watched The Man in the Iron Mask at the dollar theater.  What was wrong with us??

It's a Zoo Around Here

2008_041404150008

Even the meercat was looking at me like, "What are you doing here?  Don't you have a craft show this Sunday?!?"  Seriously though, it was a lovely afternoon at the zoo today.  I made a promise/mission statement this year that I would not let my work+business stuff dominate my life, even when it's 'crunch time', like the week before a craft show, and add to that a surprising flurry of business at both my vintage and supply shop these last few day, too.  I am always grateful (and often even amazed) that I sell anything at all, but keeping perspective can be hard.  My instinct is to pack every order immediately, list more items, research for new products, make new handmade things, etc.  But, as the saying goes, all work and no play makes Jack a dull boy. And it is very true.  Finding that elusive balance that everyone talks about seems like a pipe dream most of the time, but I have to keep trying, right?

2008_041404150014_2

We thought it very strange that the peacock was just hanging out in rafters of the barn area like that, but I guess they are allowed to just roam about the zoo on their own, because later we saw this same bird wandering into the Men's Room next to the reptile gallery.

If you haven't guessed already, this is turning into the obligatory - I'm too busy to blog this week so here I am blogging about how I'm too busy to be blogging - blog post. I'll be back soon though, I promise.  This Friday's Hero post will be replaced with a Friend-of-the-Blog coupon for the Bada-Bing in Richmond this Sunday.  So if you're local, planning on going to the show, and you like free stuff, you may want to check back here Friday!

Bye for now.

Hero411_3

There's nothing like the arrival of a Land's End Swimsuit Catalog to have one dashing over to Netflix to browse the exercise videos, (a section rarely perused in this house, that's for sure.)  But nevertheless, there I was, desperately looking for help (and possibly a miracle), and all I could really find were the hip hop style work-out tapes.  Since there were several on instant view, I thought I'd give them a shot, and WOW was that educational.  I'm not usually embarrassed to flail around like an idiot (in the comfort of my own home, with he shades drawn), but these videos were difficult.  I couldn't begin to keep up, I felt beyond ridiculous, and Max was better at it than I was.  I about gave up, but then I found the video pictured above. I Hate to Exercise, I Love to Tap.  Now this was more like it!  The difference was night and day.  Instead of a Britney Spears look-alike screaming at me to "pop it and reverse", (excuse me?) I was gently told to "step-ball -change."  Ah, a familiar phrase from a distant memory of Elementary dance lessons!  Now this was more like it.  I've been doing the video for over a week now, and I'm about ready to put taps on my shoes, thirft some dancing outfits, and have Mike cut a big piece of plywood for me so I don't destroy our wood floors.  After that, Broadway?  Perhaps not, but there are a few routines from some favorite musicals that I'd like to learn.  Like the 'Easy Street' number from Annie.  It looks pretty simple, lots of organized flailing.

Think what you want about the movie, but it's worth watching just to see Tim Curry lick that envelope, yowza!  So, it looks like I'll actually need two more people to pull off this routine.  Whatever, as long as I get to be Bernadette.  Actually, if I could be anyone in the world, I would be Bernadette Peters.  She's just the bee's knees and I've always loved her.  She totally cracks me up in The Jerk, and I love this scene (which reminds me to put learning to play the ukulele on my 'to do' list.)

If I could ever pull off a real, semi-difficult tap routine, I would try to learn the elevator scene form Throughly Modern Millie, another movie/musical dear to my heart.  If you've never seen it, you should.   It's an odd mix of zany, charming, and plain silly (all with a strange backdrop of kidnapping and the sex slave trade.)  It's totally crazy and surreal, but it will make you want to be a jazz baby, I guarantee it.

(Oh, and by the way Kat, my copy of Millie mysteriously decided to start playing after you left that night!  Not that is was disappointing watching Clue instead, but I really missed the Tapioca, you know?  Maybe next time....)

Like I really should have been updating the vintage shop today, right?  But, I was just hit with a stomach-bug, and mindless computer work is really all I felt up for today.  At least I've got a huge chunk of goodies in the shop now, even if it didn't have high priority on the old "to do list."

There's everything from creepy clown heads to vintage jewelry supplies available.  Feel free to take a gander.  Everything is over in the new Out Like Bandits Vintage Shop, (I really need to get a link to this shop over in my sidebar.)

I can't believe I'm selling some of this stuff, like this candle holder and vintage baby book....

Catching up

The fabric-giveaway bundles, headed out to lucky winners.  (Perfectly complemented by postcards from J.J.)

2008_040704070006

Finishing up a Wes Anderson themed swap I joined over on Swap Bot.  If you are a fan, you will recognize the movie right away!  I'll be sure to post more pics after everything is sent out.  I had so much fun with this swap, it was just perfect for me and I really got into it.

2008_040704070008

Giant tub of half-done creatures.  Some for a surprise wholesale order, some for Spring Bada-Bing.  I've now officially and completely depleted my felted sweater supply, and since most thrift stores have cleaned out their Winter clothes, these will be the last Critters until Autumn.  How I shall miss them.

Speaking of Bada-Bing, there is much to be done, I can't believe how fast this show has snuck up on me!  Only two weeks left!  I'm very glad to be sharing the booth with my sister, that takes a lot of pressure off.  I have several new, never-before-made-by-me projects up my sleeves, I hope I can get everything done in time. We (sis and I) have actually come up with a "theme" for our booth!  I'll tell you all about it later, it's sort of silly, but we are getting such a kick out of it.

Thanks for stopping in, I hope you all made it through Monday in one piece.  Speaking of pieces...

Delicious Jalapeno Pretzel Pieces.  I'm so addicted to these right now.  Perfect to nibble on while brainstorming and idea-mulling.  (Just don't plan on smooching or even talking to anyone later, yikes!  These things leave you with dragon breath for hours.  But so worth it.)

Garbage Pickers

Since I shared my thrifty fabric stash last week, I though it might be a good time to expound on the whole thrift-thing, and really dig into the subject.  But first, a musical interlude:

Do you guys like the music of Blanche?  I'm always behind on the trends, and I'm never hip to the hot, new stuff, so I'm going to assume that you've all heard of them and avoid embarrassment.  I like their shtick, I gotta say, but I especially enjoy this little ditty that's a not-so-subtle tribute to the thrifty at heart.  You can listen to it here, it's called Garbage Picker.    If you like their style, I'd recommend popping over to their terribly lovely website and listening to Another Lost Summer,  it's one of my faves (but it's actually best listened to in late August.)

Now that we've taken care of the overture.....on with the show.

Since I have been planing to create an entire Spring/Summer wardrobe with as many recycled pieces as possible, I thought it would be fun and educational to document my progress on my blog, and over at this flickr group I started up.  If you are interested in playing along, please do sign up and post pictures!  You don't have to commit to anything crazy, you don't have to be in the pictures, there really aren't any rules, just have fun!  You can post pics of any clothing or accessories for yourself, or loved ones that was thrifted, from a yard sale, found on the side of the road, or recycled in any way.  If you like, tell us a bit about where you found it, how much you paid, why you like it, etc.  And if you come home with a few dud (as we ALL do from time to time, ) you can post them as freebies to anyone who is interested.  Sometimes I buy things that I know are not going to fit or look good on me, but I just can't help it.  Shipping a light, summer item in a bubble mailer is less than $2 (only a bit more for International) so sending a few pretty things to a better home is not a big expenses (plus it can be kinda fun!)  All of that is optional, of course, and I'd like to just stick to free stuff, no money involved, if that's OK with y'all.

I've already posted some things from a thrifting haul last weekend, and you can see and read about them over at the flickr group.  I can already see a that I'm going to have some weak areas.  One of them is the shoe department.  I can never seem to find good shoes, probably because my feet are giant and boat-like (tall girl = big feet.)  I usually get really discouraged and often skip that section altogether, so that's something I'll have to work at.  Also, the fun of buying cute tops often leaves me lacking in bottoms, so I must remember to scour the capris and skirts with more vigilance.  It is very relieving when a thrift store has a changing room (no matter how sketchy it may be) because that lessens my chances of bringing home garments that wouldn't fit me on a good day with a girdle.  I'm NOT very talented at eyeballing sizes and there is nothing more depressing than getting home and realizing, "Wow, guess I'm not exactly a size 10 by Banana Republic standards."  (But who was I kidding anyway?  I'm really a 12...)  The double edge to this sword is, that sometimes miracles happen and that size 7 dress that you though looked a little big actually does fit and looks awesome.  The morale is, try it on if you possibly can and don't buy it if it doesn't fit.  I was in Thrift Store City last Saturday, holding up a darling summer dress that I really wanted to fit (despite the discouraging size on the label.)  I was looking down at the waist, talking to myself (a bad habit of mine when I'm thirfting,) and this old lady standing next to me piped up, "Forget it honey, it ain't your size."  I was a bit taken back. The raspy, Marlboro voiced lady was absolutely right, and it was refreshingly honest.  I thanked her, and put the dress back.

You can meet quite interesting people at thrift stores, I always do.  You would think that, given the nature of establishment, it would be teeming with sad, downtrodden souls wandering the aisles, looking forlorn and despairing about their lot in life, too poor to afford the Mall, forced to buy second-hand.  But, that has never been my observation.  For the most part,I find the energy high and the shoppers fierce.  Hungry for a bargain, enjoying the hunt, digging for treasure.  I'm often surprised at how competitive even I can get, if someone walks buy with cart full of cute things, I'll beat myself up, "Why didn't I find that stuff first?  Why was I wasting time looking a the belts??"  There's never a dull moment.  Shortly after my fashion tip from Grandma-Menthol, I noticed I was being tailed by an older gentleman that was fond of natural linen dresses.  He kept asking me if I thought they would be OK in the machine, or if they'd have to be sent to the cleaners.  I told him I was not the best person for advice in that department, and he went on to tell me his life story, that his operation was next week, and how it was so expensive.  I'd noted already that he was a tranny (and yes, I can use that term because I watch Law and Order SVU and I have been schooled in this sort of lingo.  I would never, for example, call for an 'ambulance' again in my life.  That's rookie.  The proper term is 'bus', and don't forget it.  Save yourself the embarrassment.)  Anyway, I did find myself taken aback a little with the 'surgery talk', not because I found it particularly shocking, but because it wasn't a typical conversation for me and I wasn't sure how to respond.  I said the first thing that came to mind, "Are you excited?"  Apparently that was incorrect, because she gave me a funny look and walked away.  What I should have said is that linen wrinkles like a champ, and she'd look better in jewel tones.

OK, the point is:  thrifting doesn't have to be hard, and it's not always exciting.  People ask all the time where I find my stuff, and say how lucky I am (and I do think luck is a factor) but I put in the hours, believe me.  For every killer haul I've made, there were at least five times that I trudged through an entire shop and left with nothing but a headache.  But, the same thing happens sometimes on a trip to the Mall, and I know you all have experienced that, too.  Here are a few tips and ideas that might help:

1.) Develop techniques to get you through a store faster.  Like, I have long legs, so when I browse the pants I just scan at the bottom and only look twice at ones that stick out far below the others.  Shop by section, and if you are feeling burnt-out, concentrate in one area only.  Don't feel like you have to scour the whole store.

2.)  Use a cart and if you like an item, just put it in and keep going.  Do a final weed-out at the end, before you check out.  I find it distracting and time consuming to hem-and-haw over every item as you find it.  If it really strikes your fancy, just toss it in the cart and keep going.  When you are ready to leave, you can go through the items assembly-line style and duds usually stick out like sore thumbs.

3.)  Keep a mental list about what you need/would like to find, but don't obsess about it.  In fact, don't even write it down.  You'll just get discouraged.  Thirfting is about the serendipitous not the scheduled.  I usually seem to find what I want, but not necessarily when I'm looking for it.

4.)  Step outside of your box.  This is hard for me, because I can be a real plain-Jane when it comes to clothes.  Thrifting is great for that, because it allows you the opportunity to try new things without a major monetary risk.  That daring-style top that I would never spend $75 on at Macy's is worth a gamble from Thrift USA for $3.99.  So what if I only wear it once?

5.)  If your heart tells you gotta have it, then just buy it.  Seriously.  I can't tell you how many times I've been haunted buy unbought treasures.  And for what?  A few measly dollars?  Even if you just donate the thing right back to the store next year, it's better than the regret.  I almost lost the Sea Captains due to my hesitation, and that would have been a sad thing, indeed.  Don't tempt fate.  If you have to "go back" for something, it will almost always have disappeared.

6.)  It goes without saying that buying second-hand is about as "Green" as you can get.  Your shopping local, your recycling, repurposing, and (depending on the store) you are often supporting a good cause.  Emerald green, in my book.  Gotta love it.

Whoa.  That was lot of info for one post.  Hope you're not bored to tears!  I could write on and on about the subject (maybe I should write a book?  Everyone else is.)  But that's enough for today, I will post more tips and ideas later, especially since Yard Sale Season is almost upon us, and that's a horse of a different color, my friends.  For all of you that complain there are no good thrift stores in your area, tune in for the Yard Sale tips, 'casue I know you can find a couple of those to hit up this Spring.  Oh, and I really must do a post about my sister, for even though it's only April, she has already won the "Thrifting Bandit of the Year" award.  For real, I could never top the goods she's unearthed already this year.  I cower in her almighty shadow.  I'd have to find the Hope Diamond on a bric-a-brac shelf to even still be in the running.  I did find a picture the other day that looks like it COULD be the last known photo of Jimmy Hoffa.  Doubtful, but it's all I got.

I sent you guys a "Winning Notification" email, but please do send me your address so I can get your fabric bundles out to you right away!

Thank you all so much for playing along!!  I wish I could send fabric to everyone, but that would leave my stash pretty bare....76 comments, wow!  Fun fun.  My apologies for not getting this taken care of yesterday, I was going to come up with some elaborate, fantastic excuses (since today is April Fool's and all,) but I'm just too lazy.  In fact, that's why I didn't get around to it yesterday.  Oops.  But there is much more to chat about, so I'll be back on the blogging scene soon!

March28

(Helpful Hint: Hang in there through my mindless blathering 'cause there is a giveaway at the end of this post!)

Most all of my fabric has now been sorted, folded and stacked.  (The big section on the lower left still needs some work, but we'll get to that eventually.)  At least you can see everything. and though it may not be so spectacular by traditional crafty-blog standards, when I look at this shelf I'm like, "Holy crap, that's a lot of fabric!"  Where did it all come from?  80% thrusting & yard sales, 10% hand-me-downs, 10% Fabric store coupon day.  I don't buy expensive fabric, I just can't.  My sensibilities will not let me, no matter how pretty the pattern.  I see a $$-a-yard price tag and I just laugh,' I don't THINK so.'  I'm not putting down the folks who do splurge on the good stuff, not at all.  You go ahead with your bad-self.  It's  just not my thing.

Here is breakdown of my STASH:

The above photo collection was inspired by this lovely blog post about an equally yummy yarn stash.

Mostly I just want to get some sewing projects going so I can make room for more fabric, therefore continuing the cycle and feeding my addiction.   Know something else that can help?  A GIVEAWAY!  Oh yeah!  What a perfect way to get some space on the shelves, allow innocent blog readers to be my enablers, and make me feel like a good, charitable person all at the same time.  Genius.   I actually love doing blog-giveaways.  It is also pretty awesome that I participated in a giveaway on the Marmee Craft Blog recently and was a chosen WINNER!  Wow, I don't think I'd ever won anything online before, and I was just tickled pink.  Her blog and shop are one of my faves, and you really should drop in if you have the chance.

OK, down to business.  Anyone want of piece of my stash?  Just leave a comment in this post, preferably picking a style or two of fabric that are your ultimate favorites.  (And be sure to leave an email Addy or link so I can contact you if you win!)  I'll leave the comments open and choose three, random winners next Monday.  Each chosen one will receive all the lovely fabric bits that I can shove into a large bubble mailer.  Sound fun?  Then please play along! And, as always, thank you all for reading and participating on my blog.  It ain't much, but I'm kinda fond of it.

(Psst.  Comments are closed now, but oh my goodness!  What a ton of responses, I'm speechless!  Look out for the drawing of the names later this evening, when I'm back from the Post Office , and supper is over.  You know how it is.)

2003_010503230010

Spring Break!  Whoo!
We keep saying that over and over, and it makes it feel more like were in Cancun.  Seriously though, lots of stuff getting done over here and it's very exciting.  With the help of my lovely sister, we have managed to completely rearrange the second story of the house, which means I now have my VERY OWN STUDIO.  This is a tremendously big deal for me, I can't even tell you.  I started sharing a room with Mike, and it worked out for a while.  It may have been doable longterm if it was just me and my handmade-shop.  But, once the miniature shop started to take off, the stacks and piles of stuff grew and grew, and I added more stock and the piles swelled and heaved, toppled and crashed.  Not a pretty picture.  It became pretty apparent that no amount of clever storage and organizing was going to help the situation.  It was either give up the biz, or move it out.

2003_010503230014

Organizing this move was no small task, we have three bedrooms and one of them is so small, I'm sure most people have closets that are bigger.  (Our house is almost 100 years old...what are you gonna do?)  The itty-bitty room started as Max's nursery, but his toy collection quickly out grew it.  Then it became Mike's studio room for a while.  Now, sadly, it is our bedroom.  With room for a bed and a small dresser - and that's it.  Sort of like their bedroom in Barefoot in the Park, except you don't have to step over the bed to open the closet.  ( I just love that movie to pieces.)  Happily, the other two rooms are quite spacious, and one of them is ALL MINE!!!  It's so amazing, I mean, I spend so much time making, and packing orders, now I have a bright, uncluttered room to do it in.  Heaven.  I will share pictures very soon, but you have to keep in mind there is still much to be done.  I still need to thrift some pretty accent and storage pieces, decorate the walls, and the whole room desperately needs to be painted.  It's the only room in whole house that we haven't painted since we bought the place (over 7 years ago) so....yeah, it really needs it.  I'm having a hard time picking a color, too!  Should I just repaint it a nice, crisp white?  Is that best for working a creating?  A large part of me is screaming PINK!   Paint it PINK!  Then again, a light mustard yellow would be quite nice.  Hmm, decisions.  When I narrow it down, I'll post my top three colors and maybe you all can help me out.  I'm not planning the painting project until the end of April, after Spring Bada-Bing is over.  Yep, Kristina and I got in the show, which means we have a lot of crafting to do these next few weeks, and that's good!  I've been missing the crafty part of myself lately.

Easter '08

2003_010503230019

Max is one lucky bunny.  Check out this year's Easter loot:

2003_010503230015

Fist, look at that killer, vintage basket.  Sweet, huh?  Found that thrifting last week, and I quickly repossessed it after the day's festivities were done.  And the goodies, oh my.  This is what happens when your parents are poor communicators and forget to tell each other that they already bought Easter basket stuff.   Daddy-bunny said that the new Wii game, Cooking Mama, was really a present for me, too (and it's really so fun!  I highly recommend it!)   Besides that, there were many fun Kidrobot toys, Mr. Sketch scented markers, Hotwheels, and just a touch of candy.  Pretty much the best Easter Basket ever.  And the whole day was perfect.  Family fun and good food.  Just as it should be.

I hope everyone else had a happy weekend, too!  And is anyone else super-stoked about Spring Break?!  The weather here is supposed to get nice and balmy soon, the kiddo is home from school which I LOVE, (and how silly is that?  He goes to preschool for a measly 3 hours a day and I still hate it when he's gone.)  Anyway, I approaching the coming week with renewed vigor.  There is much fun to be had, and I can't wait.
