In which I ride off into the sunset.....

Thanks so much everyone out there, for the tough-love about the whole smoking thing!  My cheeks are stinging and I'm ready to retire the cowgirl fantasy now.  I wasn't seriously considering taking up smoking again, I was just being honest about an annoying habit that tries to rear it's ugly head every now and then.  I quit after I got married, before we started thinking about having babies.  I didn't smoke again until much later when I picked up a few shifts at the old restaurant I used to work at.  The money was so good, I got sucked back into the waitressing world for a few months before I was able to break out again.  Smoking and restaurant jobs just go together, I'm afraid.  I only smoked during breaks with friends, never at home and certainly never anywhere near my kid....but I still felt guilty about it.   But I definitely don't regret it, if I hadn't gone back I never would have met my dear friend Kat.  And, I'm just so bursting with happiness for her right now that I couldn't possible think of smoking again!  (But those were good times, eh friend?  Well, here's to the future...and the much grander things that lie ahead!)

In other news, the garden has really begun to burst at the seams!

I shall have roses, and Max shall have strawberries.  I'm so excited about this rose.  It's a climber called Angel Face, and it was just a twig when I planted it last year.  Now it is over 8 feet long, twined around my fence!  I tried not to count the buds, (over 15!!!!).  I ordered this, another climbing miniature rose and a Passion flower vine from Brushwood Nursery last year, and I would highly recommend them.  The passion flower vine was just breathtaking, and I will be excited to see it come back this year (still a bit early.)

Max is excessively attentive to his little strawberry patch.

In studio news, more creatures are incubating/gestating (eww..)  And I have been enjoying the fruits (and fungus) of my late-night Internet shopping excursions.  Also, I am finishing up my first wholesale order, which has been terribly exciting.  I'll give you the details later, but I'll just tell you now that A. Bel Studio is going International!  (And you'll never guess where this little order is headed...)

Here's to a lovely weekend everyone!

I was a Cowgirl

2007_032803290004_2

Lately the open range has been calling to me.  It's hard to resist.

Here are the top five reasons why I should take up smoking again:

1.  I would lose weight.  (Horrible, I know, but true.)

2. Smoking makes you look cool.  People have been trying to disprove this for years now, but it's just impossible to deny.  People who know how to smoke, I mean really know how to smoke, are amazingly cool.  Watching John Travolta (the younger version!) take a long drag is akin to watching a perfect sunset, or a galaxy of stars.  Magic.

3.  I have stopped drinking coffee, I rarely drink these days, and I've been brushing my teeth regularly.  I'm in need of a bad habit.  It just makes sense.

4.  Tobacco is a major agricultural staple for Virgina.  I would just be supporting my homeland.

5.  It would give Max something fun to do.  Bombarding my father with no-smoking campaigns was one of the highlights of my childhood.  (I think my sister even poked holes in his ciggy filters, making them look normal, but impossible to smoke.  Good one, Kip.)  Besides, it's my fathers faulty genes that got me hooked on the Reds to begin with.  Thanks a lot dad.

So, now I would appreciate it if everyone out there would please remind me of all the MANY truly IMPORTANT reasons why I should never smoke another cigarette again in my life.  (Please, don't go easy on me...I need a slap in the face on this one.)

Hello Monday

2007_032503250032 2007_032503260019

Hi all!  Hope everyone's weekend was lovely.  My little show went well, and I have put a few things up on the old etsy shop.  I was shocked and amazed to see that a good many of them have been snatched up already!  I am humbled and grateful.  Thanks a million times over to everyone who reads the blog, or looks at my things, or takes the time to comment.  I just got "into" all of this last October, and despite the ups and downs, and the learning curves, and the work.....it's been nothing but amazing.  So, thanks again (and again, and again.)  Y'all really are the best!

And as if I wasn't busy enough, I've opened a SECOND shop.  Crazy, huh?  This one is called A.  Bel Emporium, and it's basically going to be for the miniatures, vintage supplies and things like that.  I really struggled with this decision, but I decided in the end, that my handmade items were getting too jumbled with the supplies, and having two shops would make things more organized.  Hopefully Etsy will still allow vintage and supplies in the future, and all this moving ant swapping around won't have  been in vain!  I guess we shall see.  And also, if anyone was ever interested in items from both shops, I will always combine shipping.

NOW:  for those of you that have not voiced your opinion in the Pride and Prejudice debate below, PLEASE do so!  This is a topic near and dear to my heart and  the playful, yet snarky, comments flying around down there really make my day!  So go down to the comments in my last post and GO CRAZY!!!!

(A&E RULES!!!!!)

Another show tomorrow!

I will be at Great Bridge High School in Chesapeake tomorrow for a craft show (MAP HERE).  My inventory is super-low, I was not that productive this week (it has been 75 degrees these past two days!!!)  Yeah, we totally went to the beach yesterday.  It was sweet.

I'd still love to meet any local gals out there, and I'm issuing "the coupon" again:

Untitled1_copy

I am planning a small-ish shop update for next Monday.  I should still have some goodies left  from the show.  But don't think of them as "leftovers"....unless you LIKE leftovers.  Yeah, then think of them as better-the-next day, nuked in the microwave, eaten while lounging on the couch watching Pride and Prejudice*  lasagna leftovers.

*I'm referring, of course, to the A&E version of Pride and Prejudice, which is the only TRUE version.  But you can go ahead and watch the Keira Knightly version if you want to.....as long as you don't mind getting motion sickness and suffering through bawdy, third rate acting, AND not to mention NO sign of Colin Firth.  You go right ahead.

***Everyone, feel free to jump in the Pride&Prej. debate in the comments!  And remember, no matter what I may say, this is just a freindly, little debate - she said as she rubbed her hands together and let out a sinister chuckle.

....she's at it again

Ok, just these earrings and then that's it!!!  No more shopping for me!

Aren't they lovely?  I've had my eye on them for a while now.  I don't wear jewelry very often, especially earrings.  These are so simple, dainty and small...I just couldn't resist.  Also the name, "nicotiana" really helped sell me on them too.  Love that flower.  It's also a nocturnal bloomer, like the moon flower.  It's a terribly "southern" plant, actually a form of tobacco.  I tried, unsuccessfully, to grow some last year.  It never achieved the "stately height of four feet."  Mine slowed after about a foot then did nothing but sulk, look dead and attract scary insects.  I think at some point it put out one pitiful bloom.  Sigh......

....there's always this summer.....

I bought these (on etsy, of course!) from the lovely ES Designs.  There are too many gorgeous things in their shop...go see for yourself!

Also:  the new banner.....I think I was having a teensy sugar craving.  What do you think?  (tee hee)

It's wrong.....it FEELS wrong.....

Oh my......I did a little on line shopping last night.  Shouldn't have, didn't need to.....but REALLY WANTED too.  Nothing to drastic, but even small splurges are, well, splurges...at least for me anyway.  But I was looking for those cute German cotton mushrooms, and i found this fabulous site:  http://www.blumchen.com/  Now don't all shout at once, "You never been THERE before?!?  Jeez, you been livin' under a stump, or somethin'?"  It's true, I don't get out much....but what a fun site!  SO much cute stuff and reasonable prices (and reasonable shipping prices too!)  I stocked up on bunches of THESE.  (I'm linking to them cause I'm never sure if I should use the company's images without asking.)   Anyway, aren't they great!?  Love 'em.

Then I bought this felt sample pack from HERE.  Again, just a bunch of links, but what a great variety of wool felt for the price, 60 different colors in fun little swatches!!!!.  I'm excited!!!!

THEN.....I finally broke down and bought the red/white and blue/white bakers twine.  I know, I know,.....just tie me down to the bandwagon.  But, I'm really more of a trend-follower than a trend-setter.....and I'm OK with that!  Besides, I couldn't find the brown and white in bulk.....so I had to settle.  Boo Hoo.

Some of this will be going into some interesting kits I've been working on.

I can't wait 'till the fawns get here......I've missed  having them around.

BIG miniature update!!!

LOTS of cupcake miniatures in the shop today!  Some old, some new (some va-va voom!)  The only ones I'm waiting on are the fawns.  I expect them in a week or so!  Also, I added some sampler bags of the heart ephemera pins:

I will do another hand-made update on Monday the 26th of March.  This will include the  creatures of spring, Lazy Susan Tote bags, one-of-a kind handbags and more.  Stay tuned, y'all!  (Another giveaway is due for march!  I think one of these little creatures may need a good home.....)

Why I love High School Craft Shows

Play your cards right, and studly teen boys help you carry your stuff to the car!  (But beware...the hot, young things get snatched up quickly...so if you miss your window, you will get stuck with the creepy janitor who stares at your fanny.)

2007_031603180050 2007_031603180053 2007_031603180051 2007_031603180045

Thank-you so much everyone for stopping by the blog and wishing me good luck!  I really appreciate it!  And although no one redeemed their free pin coupon this time, I will definitely continue offering them, and eventually I will extend them to my etsy web shop too!  I was leery to do the coupon-thing because I didn't want to look sleazy or goofy.  Thanks for those of you that liked the idea!   I figured, I'm a coupon-kinda gal and I should just be proud!  I LOVE using them, so it'd be only natural that I offer them as well!  Don't worry though, it won't turn into a "blow-out sale, all things must go! Clearance! One time Only event!...etc" commercial annoyance.  Just a few cute little coupons here and there for my sweet blog buddies!

Thanks again for all of the well wishes....I'm so grateful!  It was a great show and I look forward to the one next weekend too!  (I also look forward to the Summer, when I will take a break from the show-circuit and go to the beach with Max every other day, and yard sale in the balmy early morning, and eat cherry tomatoes out of the garden, and doze in the hammock with a book I've read ten times already........ahhh.)

Spring Fling

2007_031503150034 2007_031503150038_2

Getting ready for my first spring show.....!  Lotsa tote bags.  They are reversible and come with a matching shabby-rosette pin.

2007_031503150029_2

I'm not exactly sure what these are yet...but they are cute, huh?  They have blank tags so their adopted owners can name them.....awww.

2007_031503150028_22007_031503150027_2

My little sister helped me get started on these heart pins.  They are a little last-minute thing I really wanted to do.  Just wooden hearts with vintage illustrations and a pin on the back.  Simple, cute and sweet.  I enjoy having a variety of things at shows, and I think it's important to have at least a few items that are inexpensive, but fun.  I know what it's like to broke, and sometimes it's nice to be able to get a little something from an artist or crafter that you like, when you can't splurge on the fancy thing that you really want!  And I'm actually getting quite attached to these little hearts, they turned out much cuter than I though they would!  Also, I was lucky to find these itty organza bags for dirt-cheap, and the pins fit in *perfectly*.

So, here is where I will be this weekend:

Spring Fling Craft Show at Indian River High School - Chesapeake VA -  March 17th, 10am to 4pm

If there are any locals out there, please come by and say "hello"!  I'd love to meet you!  And, as a bonus, mention my blog and you can pick out a little heart pin to take home with you....just 'cuz!

Untitled1_copy_2

Please, you don't have to print out the coupon and bring it with you.  (I just felt like messing with Adobe Illustrator for a few minutes!)

I've never been to this show before, so I'm not sure what to expect.  There are over 100 exhibitors though (I'm #34!) so there should be lots to see!  Also, I have another show the following weekend, so I will not update the Web Shop with leftovers until after then.

Have a great weekend everyone!  (and wish me luck!)

March 12, 2007

the gears are turning, I can't get the printer to work, and my brother is a civil war ghost

The giant (and also unfinished) list of links on the left are for some local craft shows and swaps that I am participating in.  Hopefully that will explain, if not excuse, my absence from the blog lately!  It will get worse before it gets better, I'm afraid.  But, I shall do my best to peek in as often as I can over the next few weeks!

FIRST:  I sell pretty vintage sewing patterns over on my etsy shop.  I adore theses patterns, but my sewing skills are severely lacking...especially in the complex-garment-construction department.  I always feel guilty and moronic when my grandmother tells stories of how she'd make a whole new suit in an evening and wear it to work the next day.  *sigh* I have no one to blame but myself.....I really must take the time to practice if I'm ever going to get better.....but in the meantime, I can just drool over the amazing things that OTHER people are sewing.  Check this out:

I sold this pattern here to a lovely gal on etsy:

2007_02180219patterns0015

It was a particularly interesting and pretty pattern, so I asked her if she would mind sharing pictures of the completed dress.  Well, she made not one, but TWO of the dresses (and in record time too.)  She sent me the pictures and gave me permission to share them here.  I just think the dress is so stunning and she is obviously a very talented seamstress!

Pic 78 2 Pic2

Erin keeps a lovely shop over at etsy, you should go visit (it's right here!)  I was sad to hear that I can not commission her to make a dress for me, because the vintage pattern size 14 translates to a modern 4/6.  I knew there was a difference with the vintage sizing, but Yikes!  I'm not quite a size 4/6, so no dress for me, but I really love meeting other talented people and being even a minuscule part in the creation of something so beautiful, from something like an old pattern that was headed for the garbage.  It's fun to speculate on the past lives of old, vintage things....wonder where they've been and what they've witnessed.  But, it really is all just daydreams, we can never know for certain.  So for me, to be able to track even a small part of the life of just one little pattern...it just feels important.  Even though it's such a small thing, the small gears are turning the medium gears, that turn the bigger gears, that are making this crazy machine work......and sometimes you can step back and almost see the big picture, almost see a pattern.  And Lord knows I can't tell you what it all means....but just to know it's there.   That's good enough for me.  (Stephen King, of all people, mentions this phenomenon in his book On Writing....and I think he's really onto something.)

SECOND:  For those of you waiting for little seeds from my give away, please be patient!  I really wanted to print out cute labels for them and my printer is being VERY unreasonable.  Mike is on the job, so hopefully I will get them out to you by the middle of the week.  Still plenty of time for growing...it's hardly even spring yet!

THIRD:  My brother was a civil war ghost for Halloween last year.  A fitting choice, considering we live in an area fraught with history.  Colonial Williamsburg and the Jamestown settlement...just to name a few, are within miles of us and we have been spending time at these historical haunts for years...(decades in my case.).  Ginger cakes at the bakery, racing to the Governor's Mansion, strolling down Duke of Gloucester street, which our Uncle re-named Dookie of Gloucester street (because of all the horse drawn carriages you have to watch where you step.)  We would even drive down the parkway for the sole purpose of "ghost watching" in an area that has been teeming with spirits for centuries.  And now, as if it is manifest destiny, my little brother is an extra in a new HBO mini-series they are filming here about John Adams.  I think it is actually called John Adams, but Since it is not scheduled to debut till March 2008, I can't seem to find any good info or pictures on it yet.  Paul Giamatti is the actor playing John Adams, and Laura Linney is playing Abigale.  The whole she-bang is directed by Tom Hanks (though my brother has not seen him on set yet.)  Basically, I think it is so super-cool and amazing, and I am just PEA GREEN with ENVY!!!  It's so unfair!  My brother gets to say things like, 'Yeah, I just got out of hair and makeup."  He says they put gunk on his teeth to make them yellow and "colonial" looking.  And they grime up his hair and paint his fingernails to make them look muddy and un-clean.  Sounds like fun to me.  I can't wait to see the show, and not just to see my little bro on the big screen, but I'm fascinated with life of John and Abby and I'm sure the series will be fantastic.  I'll keep you guys updated as soon as there are good pictures and such.

LASTLY:  (whew!)  The kitschy cupcake miniature are slowly arriving!!!  I should be doing a shop update later this weekend.  I'm still waiting on a few things, and there is a chance that the fawns are out of stock FOREVER *gasp!?!?choke!??*  It would be such a travesty if they no longer make these little deer (I didn't even keep any  for myself!)  But don't give up hope.....there is still a chance I can find them!  I'll do my best!  I will definitely have ballerinas, gnomes, turntables, albums, bunnies, records,  and silver trees. Those on the mailing list will be notified first before I list them...and they have gone quickly in the past.

I'm outta here for now, if I don't make it back....have a great week everyone!
